Calls have been made for more frequent Garda patrols in parts of Waterford City following incidents of intimidation earlier this week.

Gardai are investigating a number of incidents in which a group of men tried to force entry into homes in the Gracedieu and Rockfield Park areas.

The incidents occurred on Monday night - local councillor Eamon Quinlan outlined what happened.

"It was a scary time for many people living in the area. People hammering on their doors shouting that they wanted to be let in and that there were other people coming to get them. A BMW was seen in the area in which a group of men reportedly gave chase to the people banging on doors. This is a traditionally quiet area of the city. We have many older people living here. Even those with youth on their side many were badly shaken to have such chaos come to their door on a dark night.

I have reported the incident to local Gardai and have opened a discussion with them about increasing Garda patrols in the area", he confirmed.

"It is important the top of the town isn't labeled a soft target by those engaging in criminality. I am calling on anyone who has information on last nights disturbances to report what they saw to Gardai, especially if they suffered any criminal damage to their property."

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305 300.
