A Waterford Independent TD is calling for a full Cabinet review discussion on Waterford Airport to take place in the Dáil today.

Matt Shanahan has contacted fellow South-East Oireachtas members and councillors seeking support for his call.

"This region cannot continue to be treated in this way. The Government has committed to regional aviation and regional support in their programme. It is time this had some meaning," he says.

"It is also time the South-East region was given fair and equitable treatment and funding to develop our regional economy. The Taoiseach has full prerogative to bring this matter for full Cabinet discussion and review and I hope that the Taoiseach and his colleagues do the right thing to review this case before the Dáil is dissolved."

In correspondence to Oireachtas members and councillors, he said: "It would be ironic if those standing for election next time around who may be expressing concern for regional economic development would not be in a vanguard now calling on the Taoiseach to bring this matter to Cabinet for consideration. I hope your constituents and your potential voting supporters can be assured that you made contact with the Taoiseach and other party leaders to ensure this issue comes to Cabinet agenda. Politicians vociferously calling for support to this project after the opportunity window is closed to consider it at Cabinet will be more than a little ironic. They may also prove politically damaging also!"
