A Senior Scientific Officer with the EPA says Ardmore, Co Waterford, is a flagship example of how investment can make a huge difference.

The bathing water quality in the seaside village is now rated as excellent. It's as a result of a new waste water treatment plant in the village.

Peter Webster is Senior Scientific Officer with the Environmental Protection Agency. He says in 2015 Ardmore barely made sufficient. He says "it's a huge improvement and shows the value of adequate investment in waste water infrastructure."

He says Waterford performed well overall: "There's no real cause for concern, most beaches down there are either excellent or good. One which really could do better is Bonmahon, where the River Mahon is the main source of pollution to that particular location."
