Waterford City and County Council is investigating illegal dumping Ballylaneen Bunmahon and is asking the public to help identify those responsible.
Council environmental inspectors discovered a large dumping site near Ballylaneen village on Monday, December 15th. Inspectors believe dumping occurred over several weeks and involved a significant volume of waste.
The Council has appealed to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area to come forward. Officials are particularly interested in reports of vans or vehicles transporting waste. They have also asked motorists with dashcam footage from the area to make contact.
Appeal for Information
People can contact Waterford City and County Council by calling 0818 10 20 20 or emailing contact@waterfordcouncil.ie. The Council confirmed it will treat all information in strict confidence.
Niall Kane, Senior Executive Engineer with the Council’s Environment Section, warned that the dumping shows signs of an unauthorised operator.
He said illegal “man in a van” collectors often advertise waste services online and appear cheap. However, he warned that such waste can end up dumped in rural areas.
Warning to Householders
Mr Kane urged residents to always check that a waste collector holds a valid permit. He reminded householders that responsibility for waste remains with them until proper disposal.
He said people could face prosecution if they hand waste to an unlicensed operator who later dumps it illegally.
How to Check a Waste Permit
Residents can:
-
Check permits on the National Waste Collection Permit Office website
-
Ask operators to show their permit, which they must carry
-
Look for permit numbers displayed on collection vehicles
The Council has also asked anyone who recognises the dumped waste and believes it may be theirs to make contact immediately.
