The news comes off the back off a significant growth in the county's population - which now stands at over 122,000, an increase of 6,000.

Waterford has the fifth highest population growth in Ireland, with Longford and Leitrim topping the charts.

Population has risen by 12.7% in Waterford City; 10.4% in Dungarvan and Ballinroad; 8.6% in Tramore and 5.9% in rural Waterford since 2016.

Speaking in response to the figures, CEO of Waterford City & County Council, Mr. Michael Walsh took a 'glass half full' approach.

"This is absolutely glass half full, because it's a phenomenal performance. It's a combination of a lot of factors, and I wouldn't be laying it all at this Council's door. Housing affordability, the quality of life - the effective decisions of the Council when you say you're planning for these things. An awful lot of the measures are taken on an ongoing basis. It all adds up to the attractive pot that makes Waterford a more attractive place for people to choose to live."

While the news was generally well received, councillors used the opportunity to emphasise how pressure needs to be put on the government not only to expand Waterford's offering - but to retain already existing services.

Councillors voiced concerns on the ability of homeless services to cope with the cost of living crisis, as well as concerns regarding schools, hospital capacity and emigration.
