The construction of a second cath lab at University Hospital Waterford is on course to be completed in 18 months time.

Waterford Sinn Fein Deputy David Cullinane has received an update which details the time frame for the development which will provide an additional
six beds.

” The existing Cath Lab operates 5 days per week – Monday to Friday 09.00- 17.00. ” The mobile Cath Lab operates 3 days per week (Monday/Tuesday /Wednesday) from 09.00- 17.00.
The update on the ongoing recruitment of additional staffing to support the extension of the working day to 8-8, five days per week as recommended in the Herity Report is as follows:
” The additional Consultant Interventional Cardiologist required to support a seven (7) day; 8am-8pm service was approved by the Consultant Appointments Advisory Committee (CAAC) on 17th May ” All the other posts are recruited on a temporary basis pending permanent filling.
The update on the Cath Lab Development is as follows:
The plan is to construct a second Cath Lab operational 5 days per week with 6 additional beds. Services will continue to be delivered in accordance with national policy in relation to out of hours of PPCI.
” Approval to progress to Design was received on 1st March 2019 ” The competition for Design Team has been run. There have been no objections to the appointment of the recommended Design Team by the end of the cooling off period, i.e. 31st of May. Formal approval will now be issued to the Design Team in the coming days.” From initial review with the Design Team, they are putting forward their draft program as follows – based on the difficulty of the site and also most recent experience of Modular Build / Rapid build contractors.¢ Scheme Design – 2 Months¢ Stage 2 Design , incl Detail Design and Statutory Approvals process in parallel – 5 months¢ Tender period –  2 Months¢ Construction period 9 months
This gives us program of 18 months from now to completion of the new build.  This is somewhat longer than original draft program due mainly to;
¢ Stage 2 / Detail Design is longer due to difficulty / complexities of existing site, i.e building on top of existing occupied buildings.¢ Construction stage is increased from  6.5 to 9 months. This is based on actual performance of Modular builders currently working for HSE.
