Construction work on the second Catheterisation Laboratory for University Hospital Waterford (UHW) will begin later this month.
The project will start on Monday May 17th and is expected to take 13 months to complete.
It will be built by local contractor Tom O'Brien construction, who was appointed at the end of March.
Once the project is handed over in mid-June 2022, equipping and commissioning will follow for a period of 2 months and it's hoped the Cath Lab will be available for operational use from September 2022.
Minister of State Mary Butler confirmed the news:
“Unfortunately, construction could not commence in April due to levels of Covid Infection presenting at UHW.
“Construction is located in the core of the working Hospital and therefore progress of the project will at all times be subject to Infection Control requirements and any other Hospital Operational requirements.
“I am delighted to be in a position to confirm that we have reached yet another milestone in this long-fought battle and ground will finally be broken on this crucial project later this month,” she concluded.
