Gardaí have launched a high visibility nationwide policing plan for this weekend.
Extra garda checkpoints will be in place in Waterford and across the country, as well as more patrols in public parks and amenities.
Gardaí will also be engaging with people to ensure they are complying with public health guidelines.
The aim of the high visibility campaign is to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to stop criminal activity.
Sergeant Mike O'Grady from the Roads Policing Unit at Waterford Garda Station said there would be four static checkpoints around Waterford:
"At Slieverue, New Rath, Carriganore and Passage. There's also static checkpoints in other parts of the county in Portlaw and up in West Waterford as well, and there are rolling checkpoints as part of Operation Fanacht".
This is in addition to speed checkpoints and the usual Operation Surround, which targets drivers under the influence.
Sergeant O'Grady advises that most people will meet a checkpoint this weekend, and they will not just be checking where people are travelling to and from, but they will be checking compliance with the rules of the road and they have seized vehicles recently for various reasons including not being taxed.
He said it was worth reminding drivers in Waterford that the maximum speed limit anywhere in the county, including the bypass, is 100km per hour.
The operation comes as Level 4 restrictions came into effect for Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan last night, meaning all non-essential retail will shut.
The rest of the country is also currently at Level 3 which means people are not allowed to leave their own county unless for essential travel purposes such as for work or care.
