Gardaí are investigating overnight vehicle break-ins between May 5th and 6th in the Ballygunner, Grantstown, and Williamstown areas of Waterford City.
Over thirteen vehicles were reported to have been broken into between Monday and Tuesday.
This local surge in vehicle break-ins reflects a broader national trend. In 2022, over 4,000 vehicles were reported stolen in Ireland.
Gardaí are urging residents to remain vigilant and are asking owners to always lock their vehicles and double-check before leaving it unattended, park in well-lit areas whenever possible, and report any suspicious activity immediately by phoning 999 or 112.
To protect against vehicle theft, Gardaí recommend the following measures:
- Install an alarm and immobiliser, or use a physical lock to enhance security.
- For cars without an immobiliser, consider using an additional steering wheel lock or chain.
- Store key fobs in a Faraday bag or metal container at home to prevent signal relay attacks.
- Install a GPS tracking system to improve the chances of recovery if the vehicle is stolen.
- Avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle, and ensure doors and windows are always locked.
- Park in well-lit areas with CCTV coverage when possible.
Gardaí have obtained CCTV footage of the suspects, with investigations ongoing.
