The Garda Representative Association say the horrific and vicious assault once again highlights the dangers faced by its members while on duty on a daily basis.

In a statement, they say their thoughts and prayers are with the Garda and they are calling for urgent legislation "that acts both as a deterrent and adequate punishment for such attacks".

The Association believes mandatory custodial sentences are required.
