Further increase in Covid-19 cases at University Hospital Waterford

The number of patients with Covid-19 has more than doubled at University Hospital Waterford in the space of a week.

According to the HSE, there were 56 confirmed cases on-site at 8 o'clock last night.

6 of those patients were being treated in intensive care.

On the 3rd of January, 25 people were hospitalised with the virus in Waterford. That's an increase of 124% in one week.

Last night 1,499 people with Covid-19 were being treated in Irish hospitals.

The busiest facility nationally was Cork University Hospital where there were 135 patients with the disease.

Figures from the HSE also show there were 126 people in ICU receiving treatment after contracting the virus.

In the South East, 136 patients with Covid-19 were in hospital last night. UHW had the highest in the region with 56, it was followed by Wexford with 35, there were 31 cases in St Luke's Kilkenny and 14 in South Tipperary.

18 patients with Covid-19 in the South East were being treated in intensive care yesterday.

A further three suspected cases (South Tipperary and Wexford) were also in critical care at the time.
