The funeral took place of the former bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Bishop Willam Lee. Hundreds of people gathered at the Cathedral of The Most Holy Trinity Within in Waterford for the funeral mass that took place at 12 noon.
Several dignitaries were present, including former Waterford TD Martin Cullen, Retired Cardinal Sean Brady, Retired Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary, Mayor of Clonmel Richie Molloy, as well as Mattie McGrath TD.
The lead celebrant of the ceremony was the current Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan.
Bishop William Lee was born in Newport, Co. Tipperary, on December 2, 1941. He received his early education at the Convent of Mercy National School, the Boy’s National School, Newport, and later at Rockwell College, Cashel.
He was appointed President of Saint Patrick’s College, Thurles, in 1987, and was ordained Bishop of Waterford and Lismore on 25 July 1993.
Bishop Lee retired as Bishop of Waterford & Lismore on 1 October 2013.
He passed away peacefully in the loving care of the hospice staff at Saint Vincent's Ward of Dungarvan Community Care Hospital.
