A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of 12-year-old Freya Tobin, who tragically died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Suir in Co Tipperary on Friday.
Freya had been enjoying the summer holidays with her friend at a local swimming spot in Newcastle, near Ardfinnan, when the incident happened around 4:20 pm. The area is known for strong currents. A major emergency response was launched, and Freya was airlifted to Cork University Hospital by the Irish Coast Guard’s Rescue 117 helicopter. She later passed away. Her friend was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital for treatment.
A file is being prepared for the Coroner’s Court.
Freya had just finished sixth class at Scoil Mhuire Caisleán Nua and was well known and loved in the local community. Described by relatives as the “kindest, most gentle soul,” she was remembered for her bright personality, sense of humour, and her close bond with her younger brother Grayson.
In response to the tragedy, the local community has come together to support Freya’s family through a fundraising campaign. The aim is to help cover the cost of funeral arrangements.
As a mark of respect, the Newcastle Family Fun Day and Duck Race, scheduled for the weekend, were cancelled.
