The 2025/26 Fuel Allowance season has now begun, with households in Waterford being encouraged to check their eligibility. The scheme, which helps people with heating costs during the winter months, will run for 28 weeks until April.

More than 410,000 households nationwide will benefit, receiving €33 per week or, if preferred, two instalment payments of €462. Those already receiving the allowance will automatically continue to do so and do not need to reapply, provided their circumstances have not changed. However, the scheme is also open to new applicants, particularly following recent expansions.

From January 2025, enhanced qualifying conditions were introduced for people aged 66 and over.

Applicants in this age group no longer need to be in receipt of a social protection payment to qualify. In addition, the weekly means thresholds have been increased to €524 for a single person and €1,048 for a couple.

Carer’s Allowance was also added as a qualifying payment, provided the means test and other criteria are met.

Minister of State and Fine Gael TD for Waterford, John Cummins said the changes will ensure more households in Waterford can benefit, offering vital support during the colder months and support people with higher energy bills.
