A forensic analysis certificate has been received in respect of an estimated €10.65m cocaine seizure.
61-year-old Michael Murphy, with an address on the Waterford/Kilkenny border was charged in respect of the seizure last month.
Mr. Murphy appeared before Waterford District Court this morning, April 15th via videolink from Cork Prison.
Solicitor Mr. Ken Cunningham represented the accused in court.
Jurisdiction
Mr. Cunningham noted that a significant figure was in question in terms of the cocaine seizure.
Subsequently, he said: “A Section 15A will be before the court, if it isn’t already.”
Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 relates to the offense of possession of controlled drugs for sale or supply where the value of those drugs is €13,000 or more.
Mr. Cunningham asked the court to consider jurisdiction in anticipation of this charge, in a bid to expedite DPP directions.
DPP Directions in respect of the cocaine seizure
Sgt. Hickey from Waterford Garda Station advised the court that the forensic analysis certificate has been received.
Furthermore, he said Gardaí are ‘very hopeful’ regarding rapid DPP directions.
Judge John Cheatle refused jurisdiction.
Mr. Murphy will appear before Waterford District Court on May 13th for the Book of Evidence and DPP consent.
