For the first time in 27 years there will be no Spraoi Festival in Waterford this Bank Holiday weekend.
On any other year, today would mark the start of the beloved street performance festival.
Spraoi Director TV Honan says it took a global pandemic to stop Spraoi in it's tracks.
"For the first time on an August Bank Holiday Weekend since 1993, the streets of the City won't be thronged with people," he says, "it's going to be very different and very sad in it's own way."
TV says it's unfortunate that the annual coming together of the Waterford community is off this year. "So many people always timed their visit home to see the grandparents, bring the grandkids home to Spraoi weekend. So that kind of collective being together, enjoying ourselves in the City is gone for this weekend.
All is not lost, however, as Spraoi are preparing an event for September.
TV says, "We've come up with a formula that we're going to call Spraoitime 2020 that will start on the 4th of September and run through to the 13th. It will also overlap with Harvest Festival. We're working together behind the scenes... we'll have lots more detail on that throughout August."
