Fears around Chinese involvement with TikTok and Irish Government

Irish MEP Colm Markey has made calls for TikTok to be banned on all government devices.

He claims Chinese law allows the government to seek data from Chinese companies. He says: "If the data is being passed back there is every chance the Chinese government can seek the data in due course. That is what we need clarity around and if we can get that reassurance and make sure that is clear. Until we get that information we need to be more cautious."

The US and Canada have recently banned the use of TikTok for politicians and political staff, while Denmark has urged the same.

European Parliament told MEPs and staff to uninstall the app from all corporate devices midweek.

Colm continued to say: "Ireland is recognised as the tech capital of Europe. We should take lead and show ownership in this. We have a lot of jobs in the tech sector and we need to lead in the standards and regulation of the industry."
