Home Energy Saving Kits are available to borrow from three libraries across Waterford.

The kits provide you with the tools needed to carry out a mini energy audit on your home and can be borrowed for up to two weeks.

They will show you information in relation to space heating, hot water and electricity consumption.

Executive Librarian at Waterford Libraries, Tracy McEneaney, told WLR what is included in the kit.

"In the kit - you get a user manual, a thermal leak detector, a plug-in energy monitor, temperature and humidity metre, radiator key and a fridge and freezer thermometer. So it's ideal to check if your energy is leaking out of your windows - or you use the key to bleed your radiators and make them more energy efficient."

Tracy told WLR that the kits are going like 'hot cakes' at the minute, and she described what the equipment included does.

"The thermal leak detector - that measures the temperature of your walls, doors, windows and ceiling to identify if there are any air leaks or drafts. That will be able to pinpoint if you have insufficient insulation or any potential leaks. It's ideal to be able to see how energy efficient your house is and to see if it's wise to invest in new windows or further insulation. If you identify where energy is leaking out of your house, it makes it easier to rectify that and save a few euros on your bills."

Here's how to get your hands on one of the kits.

"If you go into any of your local libraries, and say I want the energy saving kit - we'll put you on a request list for it and then you'll get it. You'll be contacted by email - it's like with books. Once you put a request in for a book, we send you out an email to let you know it's there for you and it's the same with the energy saving kit."
