May Day is being celebrated across County Waterford today. The day is an annual celebration commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the Labour movement.

Locally, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at The Mall to remember the 11 Waterford men who fought in the Spanish Civil War. Labour Party Councillor Seamus Ryan says today is always an important day on the calendar.

"It's an opportunity for us all to honour the achievements and struggles of workers in the Labour movement, right down through the years, not just here in Waterford, but across the world. Workers have struggled and campaigned for better conditions, and I think it's important that we recognise that.

"We get together each year to remember the eleven Waterford men that went to Spain to fight in the Spanish Civil War as part of the international brigades. I think it's important that we continue to do that. Those men made sacrifices at the time of the Civil War. One, in particular, was Mossy Quinlan, and we will be remembering him and the ten other Waterford men who went to Spain.

"Everybody is welcome. We have a talk by local historian Joe Falvey at Jordan's Pub on the Quay in the City, and we will have live music on the day. The laying of the wreath will take place at 5:00 P: M at the Spanish Civil War memorial."
