An elderly man was held at knifepoint during a serious aggravated burglary at his home in Waterford City.

On Saturday night, the man woke up to find a younger man, dressed in black with a mask, in his bedroom, holding a knife to his face and demanding money.

The culprit ran once he had obtained money and other items, and ransacked the house.

Waterford Sergeant, Deirdre O'Neill, says they believe the same person returned to the man's house on Sunday night.

"There is some CCTV in the area but we do believe that people may have seen this individual around the area on Saturday night," Sergeant O'Neill told WLR News today.

"Unfortunately, the following night, the same premises was broken into.

"We would ask people in the area of Mayor's Walk to consider whether or not they saw anyone acting suspiciously on either Saturday or Sunday night."

The elderly gentleman was left extremely shaken after Saturday night's ordeal and was staying elsewhere on Sunday night when the culprit returned.

"On the Saturday night, the aggravated burglary occurred just close to midnight," Sergeant O'Neill said in relation to the time-frames for both incidents, "and he [the culprit] was in and out of the house quickly.

"The following evening, the homeowner left the property at about 9:50pm and returned the following day, on the 6th, to discover that the premises had been broken into through the rear of the property."
