The Suicide or Survive charity will once again benefit from this year's Easter Sunday Mental Health and Suicide Awareness cycle which is taking place this morning.

Fine Gael Councillor Liam Brazil, who has personal experience of suicide through the untimely death of his brother James, stages the cycle in Leamybrien each year.

"When you go into a house after a suicide taking place there, it is the hardest and toughest place of all time," Councillor Brazil said to WLR, speaking ahead of today's event.

"There are a lot of questions left unanswered and the only person that has the answer to these questions, unfortunately, is gone.

"When you are standing at a graveside and burying a loved one [who died by] suicide, it's the toughest day of all time."

The cycle has raised tens of thousands of euro for the Suicide or Survive charity since its inception.

Liam says that staging an awareness event was a pledge he made to his late mother, because of his brother's untimely death.

"My mother used always say to me when I would visit her, 'Look Liam, when James took his life by suicide that time, no-one ever mentioned his name after. It was so tough.'

"She said the suffering that we went through at the time was so hard and she said to me, 'Please Liam, if you can ever do anything to promote this, I would really appreciate it because there's no need for other mothers to go through what I went through when James took his life'.

"And it was so hard for my mother to find James there that morning. It was very hard."
