The Government has announced more than a half a billion euro in funding for the maintenance of regional and local roads.
The €555 million package will allow for 3,100kms of road to be maintained, while 2,450kms will be strengthened, according to the Department of Transport.
Of that sum, €16.3 million euro has been allocated to Waterford City and County Council.
The main features of the funding includes €260 million for road pavement strengthening works, €72 million for preventative surface dressing work, €84 million for maintenance and strengthening works to be used on roads selected at the discretion of the local authority, and €24 million for strategic regional and local roads projects.
Almost €20 million has been allocated for road safety improvement works and a further €20 million for drainage works.
The Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan also confirmed €23 million will be used for climate change adaption and resilience works and €18 million for bridge rehabilitation works.
Commenting on the funding allocations, Mr Ryan said: "Our main priority in 2021 is the maintenance and renewal of our existing regional and local road network.
"This type of routine maintenance is fundamental to safeguarding our road infrastructure and keeping the network in a good condition."
"When improving our existing road network, it is vital that we take account of the needs of all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.
"In this regard, all strategic road improvement investment schemes will include provisions for walking and cycling infrastructure," he added.
