Members of the RNLI at Dunmore East responded to reports of a person in difficulty yesterday afternoon.
The alarm was raised at 20 to 2 when a member of the public reported hearing a person calling for help around the Badger's Cove area of Dunmore East village.
The lifeboat crew were on site moments later but despite an extensive search, no-one could be found.
They say they've put it down as a false alarm with good intent and have commended the member of the public who raised the alarm.
They are also reminding anyone planning an activity on or near the sea to check weather and tide times before venturing out and to always carry a means of calling for help should you need to use it.
Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
