Over 1,700 people have signed a petition calling for the creation of a public swimming pool in Dungarvan.
Families in Dungarvan and surrounding districts should have access to a public swimming pool, according to Sinn Fein Councillor Conor McGuinness.
The petition calls on Waterford City and County Council's senior management to begin the work of making the vision a reality.
Cllr. McGuinness says it's brilliant to see such a high level of public engagement.
"It's a real testament to the individuals, it's really fantastic that so many local people have added their voices to the call for a public swimming pool here in Dungarvan. It's a real testament to the individuals that began this campaign, the swimmers, the parents, the various clubs, schools and those involved in promoting water safety and they deserve huge credit for their work to date", said the Sinn Fein councillor.
"Council management has signalled their unwillingness to develop a public pool in the town, while a small minority of local councillors have registered their concerns about the cost of building or running such a facility. Other towns with similar demographics and catchment areas have very well-run public pools and the feasibility study commissioned by the council last year makes clear that there's sufficient demand locally to make this project worthwhile and feasible. If this project is to proceed it needs to be kept high on the political agenda locally and this petition helps to underscore the huge demand that exists out there."
