Chris Rea, the singer best known for the festive hit “Driving Home for Christmas,” has died at the age of 74, his family has confirmed.
A statement issued on behalf of his wife and two children said he passed away peacefully in the hospital following a short illness. He was surrounded by his family at the time.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris,” the statement read.
“He passed away peacefully earlier today, following a short illness.”
Health Struggles
The Middlesbrough-born musician was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2001. His pancreas was later removed as part of his treatment.
In 2016, Rea also suffered a stroke, which affected his health in later years.
Early Life
Chris Rea was born in 1951 to an Irish mother and an Italian father. After leaving school, he worked in various labouring jobs.
He also helped out in his family’s ice-cream business before pursuing music full-time.
Music Career and Breakthrough
Rea rose to fame in the late 1970s and 1980s. His early hit “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)” earned a Grammy nomination and helped establish his career.
His debut album, “Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?”, was released in 1978. The title referenced a stage name his record label wanted him to use.
Major Success
By the time his eighth album, “On the Beach,” was released, Rea had become a major star in the UK and Europe. He also enjoyed occasional chart success in the United States.
His 1989 album “The Road to Hell” made him one of the biggest solo artists in the UK at the time.

Rea’s most famous song, “Driving Home for Christmas,” was first released in 1986. It later became one of the most popular Christmas songs in the UK and Ireland.
The track continues to chart annually and is regarded as a festive classic.
