A local councillor has voiced frustration following a decision from Waterford City & County Council to remove a dog waste bin from Clonea Strand.

Labour Councillor Thomas Phelan raised the issue at the most recent meeting of the Dungarvan and Lismore District of Waterford City and County Council – and criticised the Executive for their decision to remove the bin given the view it was being ‘misused’.

As a result, it has now become a regular occurrence that upwards of 30 bags of dog waste are being strewn along the beach during weekends.

“Ideally, there would be a bin there – but Waterford City and County Council are adamant that they’re not putting the dog bin back there because it was being misused”, Cllr. Phelan said.
“Seeing as there isn’t a bin there people should not be leaving their dog poo bags just because there used to be a bin there. Having a dog comes with being responsible for taking away the poo produced by the dog. Leaving a full dog poo bag behind at a blue flag beach is not responsible dog ownership. Leaving any waste behind after enjoying this great local amenity is bad form. A pile of full dog poo bags is not a pretty sight to see when you get to the beach. There’s no need for it.”
