Only one dog warden currently servicing entire county of Waterford

Just one dog warden is currently servicing the entirety of Waterford City and County.

The news comes as concerns have been expressed on the rising number of dog attacks nationwide in 2023.

Two women were hospitalised following an attack by an XL Bully Dog in Waterford City this year, and new legislation is set to be implemented in the weeks ahead.

Sinn Fein Councillor Conor McGuinness highlighted the issue at a recent meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

"Waterford City and County is currently serviced by just one dog warden. There are two positions, as I understand it", explained Cllr. McGuinness. "One warden has been on leave for a considerable time, and while we all hope that situation resolves itself positively - we need to ensure that there's an adequate level of service for the whole city and county."

Councillor McGuinness says the situation has to change as soon as possible, as members of the public are also being urged to keep an eye on their dogs this Christmas.

Many people will purchase new pets over the festive season, but concerns are being raised about the safety of farm animals.

Cllr. Liam Brazil raised the issue at the same meeting and Cllr. McGuinness spoke in full support.

"Cllr. Brazil is right to raise the threat to livestock - and there are wide concerns regarding safety and responsiveness in both urban and rural areas across the city and county. What plans are in place to sure up the dog warden service in the short, medium and long term?".
