Uisce Éireann has issued a Do Not Consume Notice for customers supplied by A Water Supply Scheme in the Ballyduff/Kilmeaden area, following consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE).
The notice, issued today affects approximately 145 customers and comes after adverse weather conditions impacted raw water quality at the scheme’s abstraction point.
Uisce Éireann stressed that this is not a Boil Water Notice and warned that boiling the water will not make it safe to drink.
Areas Affected
The Do Not Consume Notice applies to:
- Lahardan
- Kilmagemouge West
- Hacketstown
Customers can view a map of the affected supply area on the Uisce Éireann website.
Water Not Safe for Consumption
Uisce Éireann advised that customers must not use mains water for:
- Drinking
- Preparing food or drinks
- Cooking or washing food
- Brushing teeth
- Making ice
The utility highlighted that the restriction is especially important for infants, advising that mains water must not be used for bottle-fed babies or for making infant formula.
“Adverse weather can have a significant impact on raw water quality,” said Maura Phelan, Operations Manager with Uisce Éireann, adding that crews are working to lift the notice as quickly and safely as possible.
Guidance for Infants and Bottled Water
Parents and carers should use an alternative water source for children under 12 months. Bottled water may be used, but Uisce Éireann advised avoiding bottled water labelled as Natural Mineral Water where possible due to higher mineral content. If bottled water is used for infant formula, it should be boiled once and cooled before use.
Domestic water filters will not make the water safe to drink, and customers should discard any ice cubes or filtered water made using the affected supply.
What the Water Can Be Used For
Uisce Éireann confirmed that customers may continue to use the water for:
- Personal hygiene and bathing
- Flushing toilets
- Laundry
- Washing utensils
Care should be taken when bathing infants to ensure they do not swallow the water.
Alternative Water Supply in Place
An alternative water supply is available from a tanker located outside Moon Café at Kilmeaden Village Centre. Customers should bring their own containers and boil the water before consumption as a precaution.
Uisce Éireann said it will continue to liaise closely with the HSE and provide updates as work continues to restore normal drinking water supply.
