A new Digital Story Trail featuring augmented reality has been launched in Waterford.

The trail explores the history, heritage, and culture of 15 different locations across the City.

Keith Murphy is the Clerical Officer within Tourism in Economic Development with Waterford Council and he told WLR News about how the concept works.

First you san a QR code and then the fun begins.

"It'll take you to a link and that'll take you through some of the facts about the story for that particular stop, some facts about that time," Keith said.

For some stops there will be an augmented reality element whereby people can watch digital animations of characters and architecture appear.

This allows people to explore Waterford's history through their smartphone.

One example is at Reginald's Tower where a Viking helmet appears on your head once you scan the code.

Another is at the Watch Tower. Here, once you've listened to the story, you have three attempts to fire a cannon.
