Des Manahan, one of the godfathers of theatre in Waterford, has died

One of the greatest musical theatre performers in Waterford has died at the age of 86.

Des Manahan spent his life on the stage, he was a member of every musical society in Waterford since the 1950s.

He was born in the 1934, in Bellevue Terrace on John's Hill, into a musical family, he went to St Declan's National School and De La Salle.

Des was recognised at the Waterford News & Star Green Room Awards in February of 2020 becoming the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

His last performance on stage was in 2019, in the South Eastern Theatre Group's production of Cats.

Des and his wife Mona were married for nearly 60 years. They stole hearts around the globe appearing on the Late Late Show, BBC News and This Morning on ITV with the story of how Des learned how to apply Mona's make up.

The pair were also grand marshals at the 2019 St Patrick's Day Parade in Waterford City.

In 1996 and 1998, Des played one of his favourite parts for the Edmund Rice Choral and Musical Society - Major General Stanley. Here he is in 1996 with the ERCMS on the stage of the Theatre Royal.
