The Department of Education is planning for a full return to schools from next month, according to the Minister.

Despite a commitment to keep schools open earlier this year, there was a closure due to the spread of Covid-19 in January.

There are now concerns with the Delta variant that the reopening of schools from the end of August may be under threat, given children aren't being vaccinated.

Minister Norma Foley says there are measures being put in place to keep students and staff safe:

"C02 monitors will be made available to our schools and schools have been advised throughout the summer to make direct contact with the department in terms of any measures that might need to be provided within the classroom.

"It might be small measures like vent improvements, there might need to be window improvements that need to be put in place.

"I am bringing a memo to the cabinet on Tuesday and all of our plans are in place... I think it's important to say that all of our preparations are a consequence of ongoing collaboration, engagement and consultation with public health," Minister Foley said.

The HSE's vaccine portal will open for 16-18 year olds in the coming days.
