The Taoiseach says there is a deficit of a quarter of a million homes in the country at the moment.
Leo Varadkar told his party, colleagues, last night that "it will take a long time to close the gap, but the corner can be turned this year."
At least forty thousand homes need to be built every year to bridge the gap according to an Irish Times Report.
The eviction ban is due to be lifted at the end of this month leading to evictions for tenants in the private rental market.
A vote is expected after St. Patrick's Day on concerns surrounding the lift of the ban.
Speaking to WLR News, Waterford Sinn Féin TD, David Cullinane says the ban needs to be kept in place.
He added: "It's an appealing and heartless act by the three leaders of the Government to essentially end one of the few protections which has been in place for renters and families which may be facing eviction.
"We know that there are thousands of notices to quit which were served which have not been acted upon because of the ban on the evictions and to see that lifted on a time when people are under real pressure is a big mistake by the government."
As of January 2023, 11,754 people were accessing emergency accommodation in Ireland according to Homeless Ireland.
Cullinane continued to say: "We all know that far too many social housing tenants and people who need social housing are actually housed in the private rental sector because we are not building enough social houses.
"This is putting real pressure on the private rental sector. It is driving up rents and it means that the supply is not where it needs to be.
"We now have many families who could be facing eviction as those notices to quit are served."
