Decision delayed on new licence for Ferrybank meat plant

Decision delayed on new licence for Ferrybank meat plant

A final decision on granting a new licence for a controversial local meat rendering factory has been postponed.

The ruling on whether or not ABP in Ferrybank can increase its capacity is not expected until June, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

A decision had been expected in March.

Huge concerns remain in the locality in relation to the planned expansion of the plant - as local resident John Hayes outlined to WLR.

"The main complaint of local residents is the odour from the trucks and the odour from the plant when they're processing the material," he explains.

"Juices often flow from the trucks and maggot infested body parts often land on the road," he adds.

The new licence has already been provisionally granted - but with various conditions attached. John Hayes says local residents are disappointed that the final decision has been delayed.

"From what we can see, the plant do not want the conditions applied to them at all and have objected to them," he says.

He explains that around 90 submissions were made in relation to the application for the new licence.

"Despite all of that, the EPA still gave them the go-ahead."
