Central Statistics Office data shows two local electoral areas in Waterford recorded the highest number of deaths in 2021 due to 'external factors'.
These include deaths due to suicide, accidents, assault and 'other external factors'.
Nationally, this rate stood at 30 per 100,000.
However, in a breakdown of local electoral areas, in Tramore-Waterford City West the rate was 61.1 while in Waterford City South it was 55.6 - the highest and third highest in the country respectively.
The rate in the Dungarvan area was also high at 53.9.
Over 4.5 per cent of deaths which occurred nationally in 2021 were due to 'external causes'.
Overall, neoplasm deaths (relating to cancers) and diseases of the circulatory system accounted for over half of the deaths recorded nationally in 2021.
The data comes from the latest batch of information released by the CSO entitled Births and Deaths at Local Electoral Areas 2021.
