Ryan hopes for DART service for cities such as Waterford

The Minister for Transport has expressed his desire for a commuter rail service to be rolled out in Waterford.

Eamon Ryan was speaking this week as the 40th anniversary of the DART service was marked in Dublin.

He says there must be continued investment in our rail services, and public transport will play a key role in expanding major cities.

"Whoever is in government next time has to continue the 2-to-1 ratio in favour of public transport that this government has introduced. 10% must continue to go toward Active Travel because otherwise we won't be able to afford DART for Cork and Limerick and Waterford and Galway."

Ryan said he remembered when it was first introduced, people criticised it as a “Rolls-Royce service that the city wouldn’t be able to afford”.

He said that, “we couldn’t afford not to have it now,” and that people in Dublin “really respect this service”.

Plans are currently in place to relocate Plunkett Station in Waterford, as part of the wider North Quays development.
