Crime Buzzters: Kilmacthomas Gardaí investigating theft of beehive

A bee-zarre theft is being investigated by Kilmacthomas Gardaí after a beehive was stolen from the yard of a house in Mothel last week!

No sting operation is underway... but Gardaí are appealing for information.

"Sometime between the 16th and 17th of April, a beehive was taken from the yard of a house," Sergeant Mark Mills told this week's Waterford Garda Watch on WLR.

"The hive containing black bees was taken between 10pm on Sunday and 1am on the Monday morning.

"Anyone with information, we would ask them to contact Kilmacthomas Garda Station."

If anyone would like to give that station a buzz, they can do so on 051 294124, or Tramore Garda Station can be reached on 051 391620.

In the last number of years there has been a rise in reports of beehive thefts in the USA in particular.

A 2020 article in The Guardian cited the growing almond industry as the biggest driver of demand for honeybees, with that industry having doubled in size in the previous 20 years.

The article states that wild bees like bumblebees and honeybees are now "more valuable as contract pollination workers than as honey producers."

There have also been a number of reports in Ireland in recent years of this kind of theft.
