The incidence of Covid-19 in Waterford has more than tripled in the first five days of the year.

According to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, the 14-day incidence rate in Waterford is now 631.8 per 100,000 people after 734 cases were confirmed here during the last fortnight. (23/12/2020 to 05/01/2021)

On the 31st of December, the incidence rate was just 203.

The national 14-day incidence rate is 819.1.

39,005 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in the Republic of Ireland since the 23rd of December.

However, the South East continues to have the lowest incidence rate in the country.

It is 589.6, more than double what it was last Thursday. South East Community Healthcare is also known as CHO5 and includes Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary.

More than three thousand people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the region during the two weeks ending on the 5th of January.

In the North West (CHO1) the incidence rate is 1,066.
