The danger some dogs pose to the public needs to be addressed, according to West Waterford Cllrs Conor McGuinness and Thomas Phelan.
The public representatives told this week's Dungarvan Lismore Council meeting that they've received numerous representations from members of the public who are concerned both about dangerous dogs and animal welfare.
Labour's Thomas Phelan says that it needs to be sorted before there is a serious incident:
"There have been recent cases in the UK, none thankfully in Ireland as far as I know, where dangerous dogs have got from a garden and people have lost their lives. But there is also an animal welfare issue and the antisocial behaviour on a day to day basis in terms of the nuisance of dog noise".
He said there should be clear remedies available to people to tackle these issues.
Meanwhile, Sinn Fein's Conor McGuinness says people regularly contact him about animal welfare and about dangerous breeds. He says he's been calling for anti-social behaviour (ASB) workshop for some time:
"There's a lot of issues, some of them very very serious, some not so serious, but there's a lot of issues that need to be gone through we need to be able to discuss openly and discuss with council officials, the ASB team and with gardai".
In response, Catherine Horan Head of Information Systems at Waterford City & County Council said they would discuss it at an anti-social behavior workshop.
