Waterford City and County Council has been called on to address paving issues in the city centre.
It follows a number of recent falls in the Barronstrand Street and John Roberts Square area.
Fianna Fáil Councillor, Jason Murphy, outlined concerns at this week’s Metropolitan District meeting of the local authority.
Recent incident
He referred to a recent incident which he witnessed in the area.
“Ten yards away from me an elderly lady had a serious fall. She ended up dislocating her shoulder,” he explained.
“She fell over a very bad piece of paving in our city centre. The paving around Barronstrand Street and up to John Roberts Square is in an atrocious state.”
He added: “It’s deadly on a wet day but this was on a day when the sun was splitting the rocks.”
Number of claims
Cllr Murphy said a passerby informed him that this was the fourth fall which had been witnessed in the same area in recent weeks.
He called on to local authority to provide figures for the number of claims which have been made in relation to falls in the city centre.
“It’s now become a hazard and really needs to be addressed,” he said.
“It’s deadly for everyone but particularly for people with mobility issues and elderly people.”
