A local councillor has queried pricing arrangements at car parks operated by Waterford City and County Council.

Speaking at the July Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford Council, Cllr Eamon Quinlan referred to recent media coverage around issues he raised involving charging fines and displaying discs.

Cllr Quinlan said he was now being contacted with “new issues” and highlighted concerns raised by people who regularly use Miller’s Marsh and Waterside car parks.

“We take a minimum increment of 50 cent every time they put money into a machine, however the daily charge is €3.60,” he said.

“This means some people pay up to €3.50 and leave a small portion of their day unaccounted for and run the risk of a fine. Most people overpay bringing them up to €4.”

He continued: “People using these car parks regularly are paying approximately €100 extra a year to Waterford Council and not getting anything in return. Could we please either change the charge amount or change the machines to allow people pay the correct amount of money?”

Cllr Quinaln was told Waterford Council will investigate the matter.
