A local councillor has asked that something be done about Drinkaware providing education programmes to Waterford schools.

At the latest Plenary Meeting, Cllr Joe Conway requested that the Healthy Waterford Committee ask schools to stop using the organisation's material.

It's a view that's been shared nationally by the Irish Community Action on Alcohol Network.

Councillor Conway highlighted that Drinkaware spends €116 million a year promoting alcohol.

He said that children shouldn't be exposed to the industry.

"The last thing we want is the drinks industry getting into the children in our schools to subtly, under the guise of education, show that drink may not be as harmful," he said.

Councillor Conway outlined statistics that say that it's expected alcohol consumption will increase incrementally by 14% every year, meaning it will double by 2025.

He used the phrase "putting a fox in charge of the henhouse" as a way to describe the situation.
