Waterford Council says it's working to secure emergency accommodation outside of the city.

Currently, people who find themselves homeless have to travel to Waterford City to avail of the services.

Sinn Fein's Conor McGuinness says it can be really distressing for those involved.

"They're removed from their hometown, from their area, their support networks, their children's schools and other supports they may need in terms of health or mental health.

"They don't know how long they're going to be in emergency accommodation for.

"Is it in the gift of the council to provide for emergency accommodation outside of Waterford City to people whose domicile, whose children are in a school outside of Waterford City?"

Director of Services with responsibility for housing is Ivan Grimes.

"This has been an issue we've been trying to address.

"We're currently finalising new arrangements with our homeless service partners, Focus Ireland and South East Simon, about putting in place emergency accommodation options for families outside of Waterford City.

"I would hope they would be in place relatively soon."
