A public meeting on the cost of living is being held in Waterford tonight. The meeting aims to outline what people can do to tackle the growing problem.

The meeting will take place in the Tower Hotel at 7:45pm. Following the main speakers, there will be time for those attending to comment or to ask questions.

Paul Murphy, People Before Profit TD; Conor McGuinness, Sinn Féin Councillor, and Patrick Curtin, SETU Student Union President are the three main speakers.

Tonight's discussion hopes to outline what can be done about the rising costs of energy, food, childcare, and more.

It comes as part of a nationwide series, building for a major National Demonstration in September ahead of the budget.

The gathering is being organised by the Cost of Living Coalition Waterford.

"It feels like everything is going up rapidly and prices are predicted to rise exponentially over the next few months. Childcare costs have already soared for most families. Average energy bills are up hundreds of euros and they're set to rise again in the autumn. Just surviving has become the reality for many of us - and even the experts have run out of ideas and advice for cost cutting. That's why we all need to come together to force government to act. By taking action and organising together, we've already contributed to the tidal wave of support for a windfall tax on the giant energy corporations profits."

"We've witnessed supporters of our campaign and members of the public tell their stories, in local and national media, of the daily struggle regarding Housing or to just get by, to hundreds of thousands of people similarly affected by the cost of living issues, housing and homelessness crisis. We've made it impossible for the Government to seriously claim its doing everything it can to tackle the current cost of living and Housing crisis. We need to build on the work to date by building the Cost of Living Crisis Coalition, to insure the Government urgently bring in real and immediate measures that will alleviate the pressure on all families and individual citizens suffering at present. This meeting is part of a nationwide series, building for a major National Demonstration in September ahead of the budget."

The meeting takes place in the Dunmore Room of the Tower Hotel.
