Gardaí in Cork are investigating a stabbing that resulted in the death of a 59-year-old woman and left her 62-year-old husband with serious injuries.

The attack occurred around 9.30pm on Monday in the Shrewsbury Downs estate, just off Ballinlough Road on the city’s southside.

A man in his twenties is suspected of assaulting the couple outside their home.

Witnesses alerted emergency services, and members of the Armed Support Unit from Anglesea Street Garda station were among the first responders.

Gardaí managed to disarm the suspect, who was known to the couple, and took him into custody.

Paramedics then attended to the victims, who were transported to Cork University Hospital.

The woman passed away around midnight. A postmortem examination is expected to be carried out.

Her husband underwent emergency surgery and remains in serious condition.

The detained man was brought to the Bridewell Garda station, where he is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which permits detention for questioning before charges or release.

He was expected to be medically assessed last night to determine if he was fit for interview.

The victims are well-known business figures in Cork and operate a business in the Oliver Plunkett Street area.
