A 43 year old Cork man has been jailed for one year after he attempted to poison a co-worker with a deadly substance which he ordered over the Internet.
Thomas Lynch from Lisgoold East, Midleton pleaded guilty to the attempted poisoning of Owen Sheehan on May 23rd, 2018 at data firm Iron Mountain at Springhill, Carrigtwohill.
Cork Circuit Criminal Court heard today that Lynch had a row with Sheehan over a pallet truck and when a mediation meeting at the company was cancelled, he attempted to poison him.
Sheehan then contacted Midleton Garda Station on May 24th, 2018 to make a complaint that he believed Lynch had put poison on his car at his workplace, which prompted a Garda investigation.
A number of workers at Iron Mountain said they had heard Lynch saying he had smeared poison on the door handle of Sheehan's car and that if he touched it, he would be dead within 24 hours.
Lynch told Gardaí that he had learned about Thallium poison while watching a documentary on unsolved crime, and he had ordered the toxin over the Internet from a company in Italy who charged him €70 to €80.
Judge Sean O'Donnabhain imposed a two year sentence, with the final 12 months suspended.
