New railings which have been put in place at Newtown Cove in Tramore are causing disquiet among some residents.

Seneiva Mc Gill says they should not have been erected at the popular swimming spot.

She told Deise Today she is aware that it's probably a health and safety issue but she says the railing are more likely to be the cause of an accident.

"They'll be climbing over them to jump in or jumping off them and that's more likely to cause an accident because the metal railings will be wet and will be even more slippy than wet concrete."

Seneiva added that she believes the railings are an eyesore.

"That beautiful vista that you see from the carpark, now there's going to be a big shiny railing. I think it's ruined it."

Responding Waterford City and County Council said it is aware, the railings were installed by the Newtown and Guillameme swimming club with the aim of discouraging people from jumping off the sea wall on top of swimmers.

Waterford City and County Council will carry out an inspection to ascertain if there is a safety issue with the railings.
