The Mayor of Waterford City and County says the Kilkenny Greenway will be fantastic for the South East

Construction is now underway on the 24km route which will run from Mount Elliott in New Ross to the North Quays in Waterford City

Mayor Damien Geoghegan says it will be up and running in Spring 2022.

"It's fantastic, it's another significant investment in the South East, it's another significant investment in greenways and as we all know here in Waterford the greenway has been a gamechanger. Places like Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan is very much a tourist town now and has been put on the map.

"What we're witnessing at the moment is an excellent example of good cooperation between the local authorities in the South East and we're really delivering something for the people of the South East here.

"I was delighted to be on the greenway as construction started in South Kilkenny."

He says it's about attracting tourists to this region.

"For long enough I think we were looking at places like Cork, Kerry and Galway as being the tourist hotspots in Ireland.

"The greenway is a tremendous asset and it continues to be about bringing the tourists in.

"This addition to the greenway which will link New Ross to Dungarvan via Waterford City is an excellent addition, we need to bring tourists in make it attractive for them to stay here and spend money here.

Meanwhile, a new 'selfie spot' has been created at the start of the Waterford Greenway in Dungarvan.

It's a collaboration between Dungarvan & West Waterford Chamber, Every Event and Waterford Council.
