Calls have been made to establish a community centre in Dungarvan.

The issue was raised at this month's meeting of the Dungarvan and Lismore District of Waterford City and County Council by Cllr. Thomas Phelan.

There is currently no designated community centre in Dungarvan and many groups use hotels and pubs to hold meetings.

The Labour representative believes a community centre would be beneficial for various groups in the locality.

"We have a sports centre in Dungarvan, but that itself could probably do with a bit of renovation", said Cllr. Phelan. "What we don't have is a community centre where we might just have some small committee meeting room so that groups or organisations in the area who don't have their own premises nor who don't need their own premises can just have a meeting without having to go to a hotel or a pub, which they may not feel comfortable with."

"If you go to any village or town around the county, they'll have their community hall or parish hall - but Dungarvan despite its size and being the county town, doesn't have a central place like that where community groups can meet", conceded Cllr. Phelan.

Cllr. Phelan is currently liaising with the Executive of Waterford City and County Council on the matter, and is hopeful that a resolution will be found soon.

"They've taken the points on board and I know one of the officials has acknowledged that there is a need for something of this type in Dungarvan. There are a few buildings in Dungarvan that I mentioned that could potentially come to the fore. I don't particularly mind where - the underlying point is that we do need somewhere. It has to be sizable for groups big and small because we don't have anywhere that can cater to these particular needs at the moment."
