Waterford's councillors are being asked to consider increasing commercial rates for businesses in an effort to balance the budget.
A 5% increase is being proposed by the council's executive as a 2 million euro gap needs to be bridged.
Because of a 2 million euro deficit in next year's budget for the council, the executive is recommending councillors approve a 5% increase in commercial rates.
Councillors were briefed on the situation this week.
Green Party Councillor Jody Power told WLR that nothing has been decided as of yet.
"They're only proposals and at the moment - we're still in the discussion phase. The Chief Executive has laid out his stall as to where we are. The councillors will have to agree with the proposals of the CEO, Michael Walsh, are for the future - whatever needs to go. We're looking at trying to increase the rates a little bit to cover that. We have to generate some income coming from other places. Nothing is fixed yet."
Cllr. Power told WLR that the various party groups will sit down with the CEO, Michael Walsh in the coming week to discuss their views, before a final decision is made on whether or not to go ahead with the rise.
