Coastal erosion is having an impact on residents in Passage East. That's according to Councillor Pat Fitzgerald, who questioned what action will be taken to combat the issue.

According to the EPA, erosion rates range from 0.3 metres and 2 metres per year, on some Irish coastlines.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District of Waterford City and County Council, the Sinn Féin Councillor raised his concerns.

"Coastal erosion at the soft cliffs at the entrance to the Strand in Passage East. We have coastal erosion there that is effecting the access to foue houses.

"The roads department is aware of it and the OPW has surveyed the soft cliff face.

"What action if any will be taken to remedy the problem, or if we are going to take any because if we are not, the residents should be aware of it."

Senior Engineer for Roads with the Council, Gabriel Hynes, responded to Councillor Fitzgerald.

"We have reviewed it. We are of the view that it is a private issue, and it is not the responsibility of the local authority."
